Manchester City (England), which won a triple treble last season, has retained the European Football Association (UEFA) Super Cup.
City won the 2023 UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla (Spain) on Sunday (July 17) at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, Greece, 5-4 on penalties after the teams played to a 1-1 draw through 90 minutes.
The UEFA Super Cup is a single-legged competition between the winners of that year’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) and the winners of the Europa League to determine the winner.
After winning the UCL for the first time in the 2022-2023 season, which ran through June of this year, City also won the Super Cup for the first time.
City completed a treble last season, winning the English Premier League (EPL), the Football Association (FA) Cup, and the UCL, and the Super Cup, which was held at the start of the new season, proved that they are the best team in Europe right now.
‘The Master’ Pep Guardiola collected his 15th trophy with City alone.
Sevilla, on the other hand, who have won the Europa League seven times, the most in the competition’s history, have only won the Super Cup in 2006, after winning their first Europa League title, and have lost all six Super Cups since.
It was Sevilla who struck first on the day.
In the 25th minute, Youssef Ennesiri headed home a cross from Marcos Acuña on the left flank.
After a slow first half, City responded with a header in the 18th minute of the second half.
Rodri’s cross from the left flank was met by Cole Palmer, who raced into the goal area and headed home a crucial equalizer.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, which remained unbalanced, City used five kickers, starting with Elling Holland and including Julian Alvarez, Matteo Kovacic, Jack Grealish, and Kyle Walker.안전놀이터
For Sevilla, it was evenly matched, with the first four kickers kicking the ball into the net, but the fifth kicker, Nemanja Gudjic, saw his strong right-footed shot deflect off the crossbar.
