Samsung clinched the best-of-seven series with a 4-2 win in the 15th game of the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League against the LG Twins on Sunday at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu.
While Koo Ja-rook, who had four hits, including a home run, and Baek Jung-hyun, who pitched 6⅔ innings of one-run ball, were the mainstays of the victory, Ryu Ji-hyeok also made his presence felt with four hits, three RBIs, and one run scored.
In particular, after stealing second and then third base in the second inning, Ryu added another stolen base in the fourth inning to set a new career high for stolen bases in a single game. The previous record was two against the Jamsil KIA Tigers on September 20, 2019, when he was with the Doosan Bears.
Although the stolen base didn’t turn into a run, Ryu helped his team win the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when he stole his third base of the game and came home to score on Lee Jae-hyun’s single. “I can’t help but talk about Ryu Ji-hyuk, but in a word, I want to evaluate him as a player who plays like a role model, showing that ‘this is how baseball should be played,'” said Samsung manager Park Jin-man, who admired Ryu’s play.
The player himself was more reserved. After the game, Ryu Ji-hyuk said, “I didn’t know I had the most stolen bases in a single game,” and emphasized his gratitude to the coaching staff, saying, “I ran after the sign (to steal), and the coach made it all happen.”
It’s not just about his senses. Ryu has been one of the hottest hitters on the team lately. In 14 games in August, he’s batting .449 with 22 hits (1 home run) and 11 RBIs in 49 at-bats. Ryu said, “I don’t think I’m hitting well, but I’m getting lucky. “I talk to my coaches a lot these days,” he said, “and they talk a lot about hitting before every at-bat, so I focus on that every time I step up to the plate.” He shared the secret behind his rise.
Ryu Ji-hyuk, who was unfamiliar with everything in the beginning, but has gotten used to the blue uniforms and the cheers echoing through Lions Park, vowed to continue his performance, saying, “I will show you how to work harder on the field and how to win, so I hope you will come to the baseball field and support us.”
