Some old England fans are still sick of the FIFA 1990 World Cup semi-finals in Italy. England were defeated on penalties (3-4) after a 1-1 draw 먹튀검증by then ‘winners’ West Germany.
England’s number 4 and number 5 kickers Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missed in the penalty shootout. Paul Gascoigne, a rising star at the time, received a warning for an unreasonable tackle. Even if England advanced to the final due to the cumulative warning penalty, Gascoigne could not play in the next game, and shed tears on the spot. It was full of sad moments for England players.
Of course, West Germany, led by Franz Beckenbauer, was in a festive mood. I remember fondly the memories of that night. Lothar Matheus, the captain at the time, described the match as one of the most eventful matches he had ever played in, in an interview with England’s PopoTwo.
“It was one of the best matches of all the World Cup matches in Italy. England were a great team and their performance that day deserved a place in the final,” he replied.
Gascoigne was one of the stars of the World Cup at the time. At just 23, he was screwed around the world.
He praised, “Gascoigne was a player we had to keep an eye on. He had a wide vision and power. Despite being a midfielder, he was good at dribbling like a striker.”
Ultimately England fell short. West Germany, on the other hand, won the final against Argentina. Matheus believed the crucial difference was England’s failure to win the second World Cup in history at the time.
Matheus, who recalled the time, explained the reason for the victory, saying, “Fortunately, we were more calm and focused. That was the only difference.”
England, unfortunately defeated by West Germany in the semi-final stage, were left with no strength. In the 3rd-4th place match against ‘host country’ Italy, they allowed a penalty kick in the second half and lost 1-2, ending the tournament in 4th place.
